NSmen are the backbone of the SAF and play a vital role in Singapore's defence. In addition, National Service has contributed towards the creation of a cohesive society and a national identity by providing opportunities for young men of diverse racial, religious, linguistic, social and educational backgrounds to live learn and work together. National Service has also generated a climate of confidence and stability which in turn attracts foreign investments to Singapore. It has therefore not only played a role in the defence of Singapore, but has also contributed to nation-building and economic development.
